Heidary 2020: Ivermectin–A systematic review from antiviral effects to COVID-19 complementary regimen

The Journal of Antibiotics, 73: 593-602.

This is a comprehensive systematic review, summarizing the antiviral effects of ivermectin over the past 50 years.

Ivermectin plays a role in several biological mechanisms; therefore it could serve as a potential candidate in the treatment of a wide range of viruses including Covid-19.  It has been shown to be effective against RNA viruses such as Zika, Dengue, Yellow Fever, West Nile, Hendra, Newcastle, Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis, Chikungunya, Semliki Forest, Sindbis, Avian Flu A, Porcine Reproductive & Respiratory Syndrome, HIV, and SARS.

The authors described the antiviral effects of ivermectin on a range of RNA and DNA viruses since 1970, and suggested it could be useful to treat Covid since it has already been shown to have “significant effectiveness … in the early stages of infection in experimental studies.”
